SF Energy Watch
San Francisco Energy Watch

San Francisco Energy Watch was launched in 2007 to help businesses and multifamily building managers or owners in San Francisco lower their energy bills and help the City reduce its impact on the environment. The program offers these energy- and cost-saving benefits:

  • FREE on-site assessments to identity energy savings

  • NEW ENERGY-EFFICIENT EQUIPMENT and technical services at greatly reduced cost
  • EXPERT INSTALLATION of energy-saving equipment

  • LOWER UTILITY BILLS over the life of the new equipment

Businesses of all sizes and multifamily residential properties located in San Francisco that are currently Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers can participate in the program.

The program is funded by California utility ratepayers and administered by Pacific Gas and Electric Company in collaboration with the City and County of San Francisco and under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.

UPDATE: Commercial Lighting Ordinance

San Francisco's Commercial Lighting Efficiency Ordinance requires that fluorescent lighting in commercial buildings meet a specific efficiency standard.

In all commercial buildings in San Francisco, all 4-foot or 8-foot linear fluorescent lamps and ballast systems must be 81 lumens or more per watt of electricity consumed. This standard is most typically met with T-8 lamps and electronic ballasts. In addition, any linear fluorescent lamps installed after December 31, 2011 must meet a mercury content standard: 4-foot linear fluorescents must not exceed 5 mg and 8-foot linear fluorescents must not exceed 10 mg of mercury.
